Dress Standards for Teachers

Ladies and gentlemen should dress sensibly and avoid clothing that is suggestive and inappropriate given the normal constraints imposed upon Chinese society. Tailored trousers and slacks are best, as are sensible length skirts and dresses. Blouses should cover the shoulders. Shirts should be collared and preferably tailored. Jeans are not acceptable for teaching and shoes should be in new condition. Running shoes or conventional shoes are acceptable, but should not be worn-out

Although accepted in most western countries; very, very short hair on female teachers is not seen as acceptable in Chinese schools. Conversely, the same applies to men sporting very long hair, facial hair, jewelry, and/or exposed tattoos.

Despite the remarkable achievements in China¡¯s economic development and modernization over the past two decades, China is still considered a developing country where resources and labor costs are very cheap. Average Chinese earnings are comparatively low, therefore the cost of such things as food, clothing, utilities, rent, electronics and public transportation can be very low indeed. The highest average monthly salary of university graduates who have majored in English in large cities, such as Beijing, rarely exceed 2 000 RMB for the first three years. However, if you purchase imported products or products manufactured by western companies, you can expect to pay similar or equal prices as what you would pay elsewhere outside of China. Medicines manufactured by western pharmaceutical companies are rather expensive in China.
